What to Ask Any Flooring Store
Who does the installation?
The single most important question. Stores that use their own installation crews (W-2 employees, not 1099 subcontractors) have more control over quality and can fix problems directly. Stores that subcontract installation are essentially acting as middlemen — if something goes wrong, you're caught between the store and the installer pointing fingers at each other.
Can I see installed examples?
A showroom sample looks nothing like 1,000 square feet of the same product in a real room with real lighting. Good flooring stores can show you installed references — either in their showroom or photos of recent installations with similar products.
What's included in the quote?
A flooring estimate should explicitly list: material, underlayment, removal of existing flooring, subfloor prep (if needed), installation labor, transitions, baseboards (removal and reinstall or replace), and furniture moving. If any of these are missing from a quote, they'll show up as add-ons later.
What warranty do I get?
There are two warranties that matter: the manufacturer's warranty on the product, and the store's warranty on the installation. The manufacturer's warranty is the same regardless of where you buy. The installation warranty is what varies — and it's the one that matters most, because installation defects (uneven seams, buckling, moisture problems from bad prep) are far more common than product defects.
